About CO

Saturday, 28 April 2007

Corpobligation = the principle that corporations have duties and responsibilities as actors in society and on the planet.

Which? Why? Who? Where? When? How? Why?

So many questions, and you are a busy web surfer, activist, business leader, lawyer, government leader, frisbee player, curious person, we will keep this brief.

Which acronym?

CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility), CR (Corporate Responsibility), CC (Corporate Citizenship), CS (CorporateSustainability), Sustainability are just a few acronyms that pop up when one talks about changing corporate behavior to be kinder/better/less destructive to people and the environment. We actually had a long discussion about this (Not that long). But we don't really care what acronym you use. CO is actually to confusing because it sounds like company. Thus, we will allow you to pick your own acronym. We will stick to corpobligation in full.

Why corpobligation?

We are optimistic about the corporation being a vehicle for producing stuff. We are less optimistic about corporations making the right, timely and voluntary choices about how they make the stuff. This is why the corporation has and should have obligations to not damage other members of society and other users of the planet.

Who is involved?

Give us a break we are new. We expect visitors from Europe, Canada, the Americas, Africa, Asia, and elsewhere.

You.

Where are we active and can you get active?

The site is hosted in California somewhere and the web designer lives in Ottawa. Yes you can.

When?

Now. And tomorrow.

How?

Change happens through individuals making choices and groups doing action.

  • Encourage and promote articles for and against corporate obligation.
  • Writing and sharing News about the good and bad things corporations do.
  • Fiery discussion groups
  • Connect individuals and groups in different buildings, towns, cities, regions, countries.
  • Learn. Share. Encourage.

Why?

To quote an idealistic undergraduate student: "Hey hey, ho ho, corporate misdeeds must go!"

For the realists: We all share the planet. We all exist in a connected political-economic community. Individuals have obligations to each other and so should corporations.
