How green are Canadians in 2007?

Thursday, 12 July 2007
  • Results of a 2006 Statistics Canada survey released July 11, 2007 that asked more than 28,000 households what they've been doing to make their homes environmentally friendly. The study compared 2006 to 1994 statistics.
  • Good: more fluorescent bulbs (19-59%), programmable thermostats (16-42%), "awareness of environmental concern"
  • Bad: single drivers commuting to work (57%), water use (30% of households drink bottled water).
  • "The survey suggests Canadians will respond to environmentally friendly practices when the cost comes cheap, he adds. A case in point is the increased use of fluorescent bulbs, which he attributes mainly to the less expensive versions sold now compared to 10 years ago."
